EducateOhio is an organization which encourages and facilitates informed participation of citizens in the governance of their school districts. It was founded by a group of people who had independently sought to understand the financial underpinnings of Ohio's public school system, and in the process found one another.
- We are not an anti-tax or anti-levy organization: Ohio's public education system is designed to be funded by a blend of money allocated from the State's budget, as well as taxes collected from the citizens and businesses of each local school district. We believe the voters of each school district are empowered to decide how much to spend to operate their school system, understanding that the more they want to spend, the more they will have to pay in taxes. We won't advocate for or against a levy but we will give Ohioans the tools to determine for themselves whether additional taxes might be justified.
- We are not anti-union: If the employees of our school district wish to organize into collective bargaining units in order to negotiate the terms and conditions of their employment, that is their prerogative. However, we are concerned when the students are used as pawns in the negotiation process, regardless of whether it is by the unions or the district leadership.
- We are not experts on curriculum: While our members include professional educators and school board members, the primary purpose of EducateOhio is not to engage in the debates about curriculum, textbooks and methods. These are matters we believe should be addressed at the local school district level.
As we continue to add content, we hope this website will serve as a resource for those who are trying to understand the root causes of our school funding challenges in Ohio. As time goes on, we will add more information and analysis, including links to material written by the traditional news reporters, as well as bloggers and other online resources we believe present information fairly.
We'll soon be adding a Google Groups forum to the online presence of EducationOhio. Check back for the appearance of the signup box, should you be interested in participating.
Opinions based on reasoned research and analysis are welcome.
